Sedation Dentistry Services

Nitrous Oxide

For patients with mild dental anxiety, nitrous oxide may be the best option. Also known as “laughing gas,” we administer it through a nasal mask, and within minutes, patients begin to feel more relaxed. We can adjust the amount of gas depending on your needs, and once we’re finished with treatment, the effects wear off incredibly fast, allowing patients to get back to their lives right away.

Oral Sedation

We typically recommend oral sedation to patients who suffer from moderate to severe dental fear or anxiety. Our team provides a prescription medication to be taken at a predetermined time before the procedure. It helps you feel calm and relaxed while you stay awake and able to respond to our team.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Will I be asleep?

No. With nitrous oxide or an oral sedative you stay awake and can answer us, but you feel calm and less aware of the sounds and time passing. Some people feel drowsy and remember little of the visit.

Can I drive home after sedation?

After nitrous oxide, usually yes, because it wears off within minutes. After an oral sedative, no. Bring someone to drive you home and plan to rest for the rest of the day.

Is dental sedation safe?

Yes, for most people. We review your health history and medications first, and we monitor you during treatment. Tell us if you’re pregnant, have breathing problems or take medicines that cause drowsiness.

Which treatments can I have with sedation?

Most of them, from cleanings to root canals, extractions and implants. Sedation can also let us do more work in one visit.

Does insurance cover sedation?

Some plans cover nitrous oxide or sedation for certain treatments, and many don’t. We’ll tell you the cost before your visit. Our post on relaxing at the dentist with sedation explains how to choose an option.
