Emergency Dentistry

What constitutes a dental emergency? We trust patients’ judgment in these cases, but if you feel unsure, here are some of the incidents our team considers urgent:

  • A lost tooth
  • A partially dislodged tooth
  • A cracked or chipped tooth
  • Significant pain associated with the mouth and/or jaw
  • A serious toothache
  • An object stuck between the teeth
  • A lost/broken filling, crown, or bridge
  • Injuries involving your soft tissue
  • Abscesses in the root or gums

The majority of dental emergencies occur because of a sudden incident or injury that couldn’t be avoided. However, there are some situations where patients can better protect themselves and their smiles. Always use scissors instead of your teeth to open difficult packaging. Be very careful when eating particularly hard or sticky foods. When playing a sport that could involve contact with another person or a tough surface, make sure to wear a sportsguard.

Go to the emergency room or call 911 for a broken jaw, bleeding that won’t stop, or swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow. Our team can see you afterward to treat any broken or lost teeth. For other dental emergencies, call us at (540) 323-7063.

What to Do Before You Get to Our Office

A few minutes of first aid can save a tooth. Here is what to do for the most common dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently if it’s dirty and try to put it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk and call us right away. A tooth has the best chance of being saved within the first hour.
  • Chipped or broken tooth: save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress on your cheek to keep the swelling down.
  • Toothache: rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove anything stuck between your teeth. Don’t put aspirin on the gum, because it can burn the tissue.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.
  • Swelling or a pimple on the gum: this can be an abscess, an infection that needs treatment soon. Call us the same day.

Emergency Dental Care FAQs

Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?

Often, yes. Call (540) 323-7063 as early in the day as you can, tell us what happened, and we’ll let you know how soon we can see you.

What happens at an emergency visit?

We find out what’s causing the problem, usually with an exam and an X-ray, relieve your pain and explain your options. Some problems are fixed in one visit. Others, like a root canal or a crown, may need a second appointment.

How much does an emergency dental visit cost?

It depends on the treatment you need. We’ll explain the cost before we start, help you check what your insurance covers and go over payment options with you.

Do you see children for dental emergencies?

Yes. If a baby tooth is knocked out, don’t try to put it back in, because that can damage the adult tooth underneath. Call us and we’ll check the area. Our guide to handling a child’s dental emergency covers what to do at home.
