When should my child first see a dentist?
By their first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth coming in. Early visits are short and gentle, and they help your child get used to the dental office before any problems start.
When do baby teeth come in?
The first teeth usually appear at around 6 months, starting with the bottom front teeth, and most children have all 20 baby teeth by about age 3. Our baby teeth timeline shows the full order.
How often should my child have a checkup?
Every six months for most children. Some kids with a higher risk of cavities benefit from more frequent visits, and we’ll tell you if your child is one of them.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes. We use digital X-rays, which need a very small dose of radiation, and only take them when they help us find problems we can’t see. Read more about dental X-rays and your child.
How can I keep my child’s teeth free of cavities?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (a rice-sized smear under age 3, a pea-sized amount after that), limit sugary drinks and snacks, and keep up with checkups. Sealants on the back teeth add extra protection. See our brushing tips for kids.
