Periodontal (gum) disease is a common bacterial infection of the gums and the bone that supports your teeth, and untreated it can lead to tooth loss. Many people have it without knowing, because it often causes no pain in its early stages. At Winchester Dental Studio, we diagnose and treat gum disease to help you keep healthy teeth and gums.

Dr. Radwa Sobieh treats mild to severe periodontitis for patients in Winchester and nearby communities, with options that include soft tissue laser therapy. The goal is to stop the infection before it causes lasting damage.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

It is essential to know the signs of periodontal disease, so you can seek dental help immediately. Here are some common symptoms:

  • Oral bleeding that occurs when brushing or flossing teeth
  • Bad breath that persists even after practicing diligent oral hygiene and/or using mouthwash
  • Teeth that feel strangely loose or a bite that suddenly seems different
  • Gums that are especially puffy, tender, or red
  • Discomfort located throughout the mouth

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with our experienced dentist at Winchester Dental Studio. Our dental team provides personalized periodontal therapy to meet your unique needs. We start with a thorough examination and evaluation to determine the extent of the disease and recommend a treatment plan. We offer in-depth cleaning, scaling and root planing, as well as further instruction
on how to better care for your smile at home. Caught early, as gingivitis, gum disease can often be reversed. Later stages can be controlled so they stop getting worse.

For moderate to severe cases, we provide scaling and root planing (a deep cleaning below the gum line), antibiotic treatment and soft tissue laser therapy, followed by regular maintenance visits. We explain each step so you know what to expect.

Healthy gums matter for your overall health. If gum disease has already cost you teeth, we also offer dental implants and dentures to replace them.

Choose Winchester Dental Studio for Periodontal Therapy

We focus on preventing gum disease and treating it early, in a comfortable office. We also offer general and cosmetic dentistry, so most of your care can happen in one place.

If your gums bleed, look swollen or have pulled back from your teeth, schedule an exam. The sooner gum disease is treated, the more of your teeth and bone you keep.

Gum Disease FAQs

Do I need a periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in gum disease. Most gum disease, from gingivitis to moderate periodontitis, is treated by general dentists with deep cleanings and regular maintenance. Dr. Sobieh will tell you if your case needs a specialist.

What is a deep cleaning, and does it hurt?

A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the roots so the gums can reattach. We numb the area first, and the gums may be tender for a few days. It’s different from a regular teeth cleaning, which works above the gumline.

How often will I need cleanings after treatment?

Usually every three to four months at first, because bacteria build up again below the gumline faster than a regular six-month visit can catch.

Can gum disease make my gums dark?

Inflamed gums often look dark red or purple, and severe infections can turn gum tissue grey. Dark gums can also be natural pigment or come from smoking or medications. Our guide to dark, grey or black gums explains each cause.

Can I replace teeth lost to gum disease?

Yes, once the gum disease is under control. Dental implants, bridges and dentures are all options.
